In short, the Microdialysis probe works as an artificial blood vessel. The Microdialysis probe has an inlet and outlet tube running through a semipermeable membrane at the tip, where the perfusion solution passes through. Diffusion then takes place in the tip, located in the extracellular fluid, and the outlet side of the probe then carries the neurotransmitters or other substances back for analysis.
